Some video games you buy and can easily play directly, with others – especially online – you have to buy for the full experience of season passes or subscriptions. The latter payment model is the case especially with MMORPGs like World of Warcraft.

- WOW brand? No real alternative
The discussion about how meaningful these aroma models are what the alternatives are and what is best of it is now discussed for two decades in the MMO community. Which direction Blizzard is now pursuing and whether a subscription model for WOW in 2022 is still up-to-date, we look at the following.
Free2Play, Buy2Play, Microtransactions and Co.
To clarify whether a subscription model for Blizzard’s MMO is still contemporary, we take a look at the different payment models of other games. Because in the MMO sector hardly anyone dares to exploit players a monthly subscription.
You go to the store, pay once with real money for your game, and you can gamble. So it knows it from the past, for example, console games before there were online updates. At Byplay, one pays the developer once for what he has done, no more and no less. As long as no LCS come, the makers focus directly on the next project after completion of the product.
Byplay with microtransactions
Meanwhile, however, the trend goes to the fact that after the purchase of the game further money has to be earned with the product. The so-called microtransactions will then offer additional content such as skins. Especially with MMOs, the danger behind it is that there is a strong advantage behind the real money transactions. In this day and age, this dares no developer (at least in the western area). The developer has also done his job here and was paid, on the microtransactions no longer works the entire team. The effort is not as big as with the following model. The amount of microtransactions as in SW TOR can be overwhelming, but the MMO is also playable free of charge. Source: subscription model
Byplay with extensions
After the purchase of the basic game, the game schedules can decide to extend their game with other paid mini-expansion. Mostly it uses the term DLC (downloadable content). Especially simulators like to set this payment model. For example, the bus simulator can add more lines. The developer will continue to pay for the fact that it adds more and more content that you can optionally purchase. But the basic game remains the same.
In MMOs, however, these LCS are not quite so fast, but often use over a year development time. Through the purchase of the game, the developer also pays for enough resources to further develop the product.
Free2Play with Microtransactions
This model will follow games like League of Legends, Valorant and Fortnite. The best example of free play with microtransactions in the MMO area is SW TOR. Especially in the MMO of Bioware, however, is typically pressed for the nose that a conclusion of a subscription would not be a bad idea with all its advantages.
Most other MMOs without a subscription model require the one-time purchase of the game and extensions. For Free2Play MMOs, the manufacturer continues to develop the game and hopes that players stay on the ball to continue to generate coal via microtransactions. This turnover model is known as Gas (Games AS A Service). The shop of WOWS’s largest competitors (FFI) is quite huge, but is tolerated. Source: subscription model
At the abomodell, the player pays a monthly prize with real money to play at all. In some games like wild star or now also in WOW, the player can take the in game currency and buy it with it. In addition, for each new extension, BUY2PLAY is also valid.
Although the game can be played out with subscription and free to a certain level limit for free, but it is thus excluded from the endgame and thus over 90 percent of the remaining players quasi. The purchase of the extensions becomes a duty. This finances the running costs of the development studio and gets a free update every few months. Surely there are other combinations of payment models, in which the world of MMOs are the listed here but the most widespread methods. Meanwhile, there are only two MMO giants, which can also afford microtransactions for the abomodell and byplay of their extensions – WOW and FFI.
The illusion of choice
So now we know what common payment models there is what you get for how much you pay when you pay and what you can expect for your money. Now let’s take a look at the versions of wow and what you have to pay for it.
Starter version: Completely free. Characters to Level 20 play, but with some restrictions like no communication with players by mail, no access to auction house and so on.
Basic Game : With subscription from 12.99 euros at no extra charge all versions of WoW Classic and Retail play, but the current retail extension is not included.
Current extension : once 39.99 euros and only playable with monthly subscription from 12.99 euros. Includes everything from the basic version and the current extension.
The Heroic Edition (54.99 euros) and the EPIC Edition (74.99 euros) provide additional content in the form of riding, transmit and pets.
MMOs to keep alive costs a lot of money
Sense and purpose of these detailed listings? We want to clarify how much money we pay for developers in the end for how much content. MMOs with subscription model come in comparison to other full price games due to it fairly bad, if one only counts the months and the associated job costs until the next extension of the MMO appears.
Only in order not to drop this aspect under the table, one of course you have to remember that WOW players with their subscription not only pay the developers to work on patches. In the background there are servers that cost money, external employees who need to be paid for services, the customer service of the game, the websites and much more. It is at this point just fair to bring us the memory.
The MMO Garland
Additional services in Wow are very expensive. Who wants to change the server and at the same time the faction, must spend 55 euros for each character. An announced transfer bundle should soon make the transfer of several characters cheaper. Source: subscription model WOWS offers do not look much conspicuous in comparison with other MMOs at first glance, and you take the extra cost to keep a MMO running. Yes, somehow you have become accustomed as WoW player over the years. If you look at World of Warcraft (Buy Now), however, you will see that Blizzard has his fingers in all payment biscuit doses that you can only imagine.

That’s little surprising who does not want to earn more and more money with his company? It will be difficult if the offered content no longer meets the one he was and at the same time does not change the price. In the following, let’s know how thirty and greedy the payment model of WOW is actually.
WOW brand? No real alternative
The WoW subscription is in itself free if you have several million gold for WoW brands. Source: subscription model inflation actually plays a role in view of the abomodell. We do not mean the adapted above from the beginning of 2021 in some countries , but the WOW brand. Instead of investing 13 euros, you can also extend your WoW subscription with the WoW token or optionally buy the brand for 20 euros and place for your current gold price in the auction house.
Customers can be found in Nu. However, since its introduction in the gold price, the token introduced in the Enlargement Warlords of Drano in 2015 has increased by more than 250,000 gold. From time to time, the gold value of the brand fluctuates, but it becomes more expensive with each add-on.
An OTTO normal player has no real opportunity to pay for 300,000 gold without accumulated reserves from previous extensions, to pay its monthly subscription with the In game currency. You have to be a smart dealer and / or stuck a large part of his playing time in the trade in goods. The option of the alternative payment method is therefore more illusion than a real option.
Rather, the WoW brand helps to make more real money in WOW. The more expensive the brand is, the more it is worth taking for people to take the 13-euro subscription for another 20 euros for the brand in the hand to buy for gold about the expensive legendary blanks or sell runs for example, they buy victories over Rainbows against gold victories. As long as only gold and no real money with these sell runs is in the game, these are tolerated. Only for the excessive application of the Runs threaten smaller penalties.
