Revue Moon Shades

We are proud to present you the effort of a man developing the army, an old school… ISH Donjon Crawler RPG for Android – Moonshades. This is an ambitious project that, at first sight, will recall the good old role games at the first person of Might and Magic at the golden age of the game expansion on PC, that is- at the end of the 1990s and early the 00s. If you are from this period or if you like these immersive adventures designed for game fans like Eye of the Beholder and Wizardry, but also for players having A flair for DND, take a look.

Development and reception

It’s an individual project… a passionate project…

To prove that this game is a tribute to Wizardry and Eye of the Beholder, the developer has named these two titles as the main inspiration to develop. This is an individual project, although it is quite ordained and well sorted, which is a job for more than one guy for sure. This guy has chosen to remain anonymous and do not let her work speak for him, but he talks about the time when he was a child and how DND and other table adventure games have made his heart. Moonshades looks like a finished game, but the developer works constantly while having a full-time job outside the game industry, we could add. It is therefore an exciting project and any help is welcome.

Now, what attracted our attention to this game is that it is quite popular and well received for an independent title developed by one man. On Google Play, Moonshades Android has a very high score of 4.7 stars out of nearly 17,000 votes at the time of this review. It’s a lot, even for a game developed by an experienced company, fully personalized and published, not to mention someone’s post-work project. People are mostly praising the format and approach of the concept, which rents the classic role playing experience. In February 2020, the game had more than 100,000 facilities.

Atmosphere and History

It brings us back into the magic times of the 90s and the early 00s.

As with all good RPG adventures, the atmosphere is the key to creating an engaging experience, and Moonshades brings us instantly in the magical times of the 90s and the early 00s. The scene takes place in Harten, a kingdom that has Known days better because it is now full of invaders from other kingdoms, mainly demons and undead. The invasion started under an Okrin red moon, which is a god of chaos and destruction in folklore. The people are threatened with extinction, while all the heroes and attempts to stop the invasion have so far failed.

The survivors hide in Greydawn mountain rooms, which opens the path to the east and unknown lands. However, nothing of this will matter if the portals, by which the demon hordes arrive, remain open. In this terrible time of need, two strangers arrive in the middle of the people, our two characters. Their arrival is described as “two stars on the blood night sky” and they would have a special meaning because even the demons give them a large place. However, there remains a mystery as to their true origin, while their (our) mission is to close the portals and repel the horde of demons.

The user interface is really clean and well sorted…

The user interface, the control diagram and the basics of the game are also based on these old RPG titles. The user interface is really clean and well sorted. We see the portraits of our two characters in the upper left and right corners. They share an inventory, and their equipment interface is also with their respective sides. Everything is complete and easy to understand. Even objects, skills and spells are not overloaded with information about damage, effects and what kind of thing. In this respect, one could say that this game is adapted to the public of modern mobile games, and that it accelerates somewhat which was otherwise endless hours of reading on the skills and capacities of the old RPG games, especially on the table.

it looks authentic and well applied…

Being an adventure game of the old school, it was fair to make moonshades look like too much. That said, it’s not a game of pixel-art, and the graphics are actually pretty modern and smooth, but they also carry with them a breath of classical RPG. Since this is a solo development project, a man built from his pocket, the models come mainly from predefined graphic packs, but they look authentic and well applied, that’s all what we can ask.

Only the best notes of the BMG team…

Moonshades is a classic old-fashioned classic RPG project with a single man who has more than 100,000 facilities and a 4.7-star score on Google Play. Should we say more? As a cock of an old cartoon says – the numbers never lie. It would be a great success even for a title entirely marked and developed as a team and published, not to mention something that someone develops next to his daily work full time, outside the game industry. Moonshades reaches the Target of its clear and complete goal, which is to revive the classic RPG experience of the old school and propose it to the modern public. The best notes!
