AMD Ryzen 7 5800x3D: Performance analysis, price performance of CPUs and example

Only two weeks ago, on the occasion of the availability of several new AMD sockets AM4 processors, we had published a special in which it is about CPUs for gaming PCs. Meanwhile, the Ryzen 7 5800x3D is also available, which has a special feature through which a new star on the firmament of the gaming CPUs might light up very brightly. Through a small trick in the architecture, there is potentially an advantage that could be released in games as the delay of some arithmetic operations is further minimized. Whether this is true and the Ryzen 7 5800x3d may even be the new top games CPU, we clarify in our special.

Away from the performance, however, the question is how the ratio of price and performance looks like. For a CPU, which, for example, brings 10 percent more FPS in Games as the best CPU so far, but then three times so expensive, makes little sense. Since we have explained a lot of tips on the CPU purchase generally two more than two weeks ago, many tips on the CPU purchase, we offer you instead of a repeat of all tips, two compilations for gaming PCs with the new Ryzen as the basis that you as Completion of the special will find on the last page.

Ryzen 7 5800x3D: technique and the new 3D cache

AMD has developed the Ryzen 7 5800x3D especially for gamers. The main stroke is at the level 3 cache. This enlarges AMD from 32 to 96 megabytes. But before we explain this more precisely, we have prepared a lot of the technology of the new CPU and two other Ryzen CPUs and also a Core I9 of Intel competition as an overview in the following table:

But what does the new 3D cache now brings? In games, many different, but small tasks and data petions often fall, so that the plus of cache memory alone can make up a positive difference. More than eight cores (16 threads), in turn, so far in games bring no advantage, so that only the plus of cache could ensure that the new Ryzen could have an advantage to a Ryzen 9.

However, the clock values of the Ryzen 7 5800x3d are again slightly lower than at the normal 5800x. But the arrangement of the cache is new and promises advantages – usually the filigree single components of a CPU are soldered together or glued, so the contact points for the data are more likely to be on the sides of the components. AMD now uses physical powers that hold two very smooth surfaces without any additional means and enable to set the additional 64 megabyte cache at the top of the previous 32 megabyte cache.

Simplified, the data can now flow up and down almost unhindered, rather than that they need to achieve any solder joints over the surface of the cache. This should give a further small thrust, which is concerned with the latencies. The data flows are thus starting a bit earlier, which can act like a ping improvement in an online game. Each individual calculated image for a game can therefore be used a tick earlier.

For more static tasks such as encoding a video or unpacking a file archive, these things, however, play a subordinate role. In short, in games, there could be a performance plan through the new 3D cache, but it is not to be expected in applications. Is this true? On the next page, we look at the performance of the Ryzen 7 5800x3D based on several already published tests of specialist editors.
